Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cups unsweetened cocoa powder preferably Dutch-processed
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk whole or 2% recommended
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix for easier assembly, optional
  • 2 cups powdered sugar for icing
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk to adjust consistency
  • black gel food coloring for web icing or black-tinted vanilla icing

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer or whisk
  • Cake pans
  • Cooling rack
  • Piping bag
  • Small round piping tips

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 8-inch round cake pans. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sifted flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar until evenly combined.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth and slightly frothy. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and blend well.
  3. Slowly pour in the warm water while mixing on low speed. Continue until the batter is smooth, slightly thin, and well incorporated. This helps the cake stay moist and tender.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops with a spatula. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. While the cakes cool, prepare the vanilla icing by beating softened butter and powdered sugar together. Add milk gradually until you achieve a smooth, spreadable consistency. Tint a portion of icing with black gel color for the web decor.
  6. Once cooled, place one cake layer on your serving plate and spread a layer of vanilla frosting over the top. Place the second cake layer on top and apply a thin crumb coat of frosting over the entire cake to seal in crumbs. Chill for 15-20 minutes.
  7. Apply a final, smooth layer of vanilla icing over the chilled cake. Using the black icing in a piping bag fitted with a small round tip, pipe concentric circles on the top and sides of the cake to form the web pattern.
  8. Use a fine-tipped piping tool or a toothpick to draw lines between the circles, creating the intricate web design that resembles a spooky spider’s lair. Carefully add the web details all around for a dramatic effect.
  9. Once the web decorations are set, slice the cake to reveal the moist, chocolate layers contrasted by the web icing. Serve immediately or store in a cool place until ready to enjoy.

Notes

For best results, chill the decorated cake for 30 minutes before serving to set the icing details. You can also add edible glitter or small decorations for extra creepy flair.
