Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs plain or seasoned
  • 1 large egg lightly beaten
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese cut into small sticks or strips
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for brushing

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Mixing bowls
  • Cooking spoon
  • Wire rack or parchment-lined surface

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, minced garlic, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together gently until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the meat tender.
  3. Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about one inch in diameter, and place them onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly.
  4. Bake the meatballs in the oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are cooked through and have developed a slight golden crust on the outside.
  5. Remove the meatballs from the oven and let them cool slightly so you can handle them safely.
  6. Carefully make a small slit at the top of each meatball and gently insert a stick of mozzarella cheese into the opening, pushing it down into the meat to fill the center.
  7. Wrap thin strips of mozzarella around each meatball from top to bottom, creating a bandage effect that resembles a mummy, leaving gaps for a spooky look.
  8. Brush the wrapped meatballs lightly with olive oil to help the cheese and meat brown nicely in the oven.
  9. Return the decorated meatballs to the oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the meat is browned to your liking.
  10. Remove from the oven, let cool briefly, then arrange on a serving platter.
  11. Serve warm, and enjoy these fun, spooky treats perfect for Halloween parties!
